G20 Summit in Seoul: Highlights

On November 11-12, G20 Leaders held a Summit in Seoul. The core of the agreements was contained in an outcome called “The Seoul Summit Document.” Some highlights follow:

Global imbalances

The lead up to the Summit saw little improvement in unemployment figures, and an apparent weakening of the recovery trends. The expression “currency war,” that is, a competitive exchange rate devaluations, tough first expressed by Brazilian Minister Guido Mantega gave form to a ghost that was arguably in everybody’s mind.

Event: Innovative Financing for MDGs- A Precondition for Success (November 2010)

Last September, the Ubuntu Forum held an event in New York, in the context of the UN MDGs +10 High Level Summit. The meeting, under the title of “Innovative financing for the MDGs, a precondition for success”, was organized in collaboration with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and with the support of the United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), the Center of Concern and SOLIDAR.

Financial Regulation, IFIs: CSOs Make Demands for G20 Sherpas (October 2010)

In preparation for the upcoming G20 Summit, near one hundred civil society representatives attended the recent Civil G20 Dialogue, held in Incheon, South Korea, October 14-15 under the facilitation of GCAP Korea.

Five thematic working groups produced position papers that have been submitted to all G20 sherpas.The paper by the Thematic Working Group on Financial Regulation and International Financial Institutions can be accessed below.
