Trade in financial services and development - Memo (June 2012)

On 26 June 2012, the WTO’s Committee on Trade in Financial Services hosted a workshop to examine the role of trade in financial services and development. In a jointly-written memorandum delivered to delegates on the eve of such workshop, SOMO and Center of Concern provided a brief introduction to some of the concerns and analysis essential to a robust discussion of the two main issue areas on the workshop’s agenda: (1) Trade in financial services’ contribution to economic growth and development, and (2) Financial services liberalization, financial regulation and financial stability.

G20 Los Cabos Summit receives demands on trade-finance linkages (June 2012)

A position paper by the International Working Group on Trade-Finance Linkages (Steering Committee), is delivered in the occasion of the upcoming G20 Summit, to be held June 18-19 in the Mexican city of Los Cabos.

The paper focuses on the following three themes:

I) Investment and trade agenda in G20,
II) Commodity derivatives regulation, and trade in developing countries
III) “Green growth,” industrialization, trade and investment.

In these remarks, Geneva-based analyst Andrew Cornford explains what was the treatment of trade finance in Basel I, II and III, and what has changed with the reforms released in October 2011. The remarks were delivered at a panel on “Post-crisis financial regulations and their implications” of the UNCTAD Multi-Year Expert Meeting on Services, Development and Trade: the Regulatory and Institutional Dimension.

In an article appeared in Center Focus, Aldo Caliari elaborates on the agenda of regional monetary cooperation, what it means for development, and how it was addressed in two Center of Concern-supported seminars with governments of Latin America /Caribbean, and Africa, regions.
