Regional monetary cooperation, trade in value added, panels at UNCTAD discuss (June 2013)

RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari spoke at the UNCTAD Symposium, held in Geneva on June 24 and 25, 2013.

One of the panels he was part of addressed the role of Southern countries’ financial and monetary cooperation in financing development. The next day he shared a panel with representatives of UNCTAD and the World Trade Organization to discuss impacts on developing countries of engagement in global value chains.

On April 19-21 the World Bank/ International Monetary Fund will hold their Spring meetings in Washington DC. The Center of Concern is involved in a series of side-events:

The G20’s Track Record in Reforming the Financial System for Financing of Investment

A roundtable with G20 member governments that Center of Concern cosponsors with Brookings Institution and the Heinrich Boell Foundation. (This is a closed event)

April 19, 9  – 11 am: Leveraging private sector with public money: Positive innovation? Corporate welfare?

Modalities to “leverage” the private sector are beginning to appear in different ways in the World Bank and donors’ agenda. Join us for a session to explore and discuss the challenges they pose.

CoC holds workshop for Asian governments on regional monetary cooperation (March 2013)

A workshop “Financial and Macroeconomic Cooperation and Integration in ASEAN against the Background of the European Crisis” was held on March 19 by Center of Concern in cooperation with the German Development Institute and the ASEAN Secretariat. The workshop, held in the city of Jakarta (Indonesia) was attended by officials from Finance Ministries and Central Banks of the ASEAN member countries, academic and think tank experts for an assessment of challenges of regional and monetary financial cooperation in the region.

US Administration urged to improve coherence of trade and finance policies (February 2013)

US-based organizations urged US President Barack Obama to undertake a formal review of the administration’s trade and investment policies to ensure that they increase international financial and economic stability and are consistent and coherent across the administration’s policies on trade, development, and financial system reform.

UNCTAD's Investment Policy Framework for Sustainable Development: Potential and Issues (January 2013)

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) characterizes its Investment Policy Framework for Sustainable Development (IPFSD) by saying it emphasizes “a balanced approach between the pursuit of purely economic growth objectives …, and the need to protect people and the environment,” and underscores the interests of developing countries in investment policymaking. This article by Aldo Caliari, appeared on Issue 2, Vol. 3 of Investment Treaty News, engages in an independent assessment of the IPFSD from the standpoint of those two claims.
