A 'Flawed' Doing Business Report (May 2013)

In an op-ed appeared on the Wall Street Journal (May 15 2013), Aldo Caliari discusses the Doing Business report and the associated rankings that the World Bank issues year after year. “The conceptual flaw Doing Business suffers from is the illusion that a universal numerical ranking can capture the evolution of variables whose significance for development (and even for businesses themselves) are bound to be quite different country to country, ” he says.

In the lead up of an important gathering of European Heads of State on June 28-29, 2012, the “A Bottom Up Approach to Righting Financial Regulation” initiative organized a letter making the human rights case for the adoption of a financial transaction tax in their upcoming deliberations.

On June 7-8, 2011, Center of Concern co-sponsored a meeting called Informal Discussion on "Practical Transfer Pricing Issues for Developing Countries. Among others, the meetings were attended by delegates from UN Missions, officials from tax authorities of developing countries, experts and practitioners. Other sponsors of the event were FES New York Office, UN-DESA Financing for Development Office and Christian Aid.

Last September, the Ubuntu Forum held an event in New York, in the context of the UN MDGs +10 High Level Summit. The meeting, under the title of “Innovative financing for the MDGs, a precondition for success”, was organized in collaboration with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and with the support of the United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), the Center of Concern and SOLIDAR.

Closing the Gap: Addressing Imbalances in Global Finance (January 2009)

 

In comparison to debt, trade, aid and investment, taxation has been the subject of very little attention by the international development community. In a new paper, "Closing the Gap: Addressing Imbalances in Global Finance", CIDSE sets down detailed arguments, for issues of capital flight, tax competition and systems of taxation to be put at the heart of the development agenda. Recommendations on how this can be done follow the arguments.
