International Economic Policymakers Advise Faster Diversification to Achieve Balanced and Inclusive Growth in Central Asia

Almaty, Kazakhstan — At a recent meeting of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, hosted by the National Bank of Kazakhstan, organizers challenged economic experts to respond to the question: how will Asia expedite its economic transformation? Participants from the Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan focused on economic transformation through modernization, education, and a move from agriculture to services. Over seventy policymakers, researchers, and economic experts assessed strategies to achieving balanced and inclusive growth across North and Central Asia.

Lima, Peru: RBW Featured at Meeting on Private Sector Finance Strategies

On October 28 through 30 2013, in the city of Lima, Peru, RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari participates in a meeting on the theme “Political, economic and social impacts of private sector financing strategies.” The meeting convenes representatives from specialized civil society organizations from all regions of the economic South, especially Latin America, to assess the impact of techniques to leverage private finance for development and Public-Private Partnerships. Cosponsors are the Heinrich Boell Foundation, the International Working Group on Trade-Finance Linkages, Latin American Network on Debt and Development and Eurodad. Caliari's presentations assert new understandings of global financial trends that give momentum to leveraging private finance strategies and on the fiscal risks of Public-Private Partnerships.

Center of Concern, Heinrich Boll Stiftung, N.A., CIGI Convene Discussion on G20s Consensus on Infrastructure

International economist and lawyer, Aldo Caliari, the director of Rethinking Bretton Woods Project, met with moderator Thomas A. Bernes, a CIGI distinguished fellow and former Director of the Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) prior to an event held at Carnegie Endowment for the International Peace. Bernes moderated the evening's discussion of three goals for future work of the "Financing for Investment" study group. Nancy Alexander of Heinrich Boll Stiftung, N.A., chaired the discussion. In attendance were over 40 representatives of the international finance community.

International Panel Assesses Results of Uruguay’s Tax Reforms and Impact on its Future Economic Stability

Montevideo, Uruguay—At an August 16 meeting, the government of Uruguay took part in a public forum, during which economic experts presented research on social justice and the impact of Latin America’s tax practices. The event sparked discussion among panelists about the role of tax policies in creating economic inequality. Speaking on Uruguay’s experience, the Director of the Tax Collection Agency and the Minister of Labor of Uruguay recounted how their country’s decade of expansion was being bolstered by tax policies that sought to lower debt and unemployment and decrease poverty.
