Pope Francis Recognizes Oscar Romero as Martyr

The Church has announced the expected beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was assassinated in El Salvador in 1980 in the midst of a brutal civil war. There has been great debate over the Archbishop's cause for sainthood over the decades, yet Pope Francis opened the path to canonization by declaring Romero a martyr of the faith. Read more.

Pope Francis speaks on Christian Martyrdom, ISIS, and the Ecumenism of Blood

Pope Francis calls for a greater communion of Western and Eastern Christianity of all traditions as Christians face persecution around the world, particularly considering the murder of 21 Coptic Christians by the Islamic State earlier this week. The targeting of Christians by radical, militant Islamic groups has led to incidences of martyrdom of our Christian brothers and sisters, recalling Pope Francis' comments on the ecumentism of blood. Pope Francis: Church cannot 'condemn anyone for eternity'

The Pope's latest comments to a group of cardinals and bishops on Sunday during Mass at St. Peter's Basilica calls on the Church to reach out to the marginalized. EFJ Project Posts New Advent Resources

 Education for Justice has posted two new Advent resource series at www.educationforjustice.org.  A daily calendar explores the signs of the times, offering reflections that connect Advent scriptures to the many crises facing the human family, along with prayers and action ideas. Weekly reflections on the Sunday gospels also are available, providing links to daily scripture readings as well as spiritual exercises and action links. These reflections, along with our new "Mother of the Living Gospel" prayer, echo the words and spirit of Pope Francis' new exhortation, "The Joy of the Gospel."
