An open letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon urges him to nominate a candidate who “has the capacity and courage for independent thought” as the next Secretary General of UNCTAD.
The letter argues for no candidate in particular, but urges that the UNSG select someone who looks at global analysis from a development perspective and promotes fresh thinking on trade and development. The letter argues that the next Secretary General of UNCTAD should be one that promotes innovative thinking that chart a sustainable way of the current crisis that contributes to development and poverty reduction. The letter has over 100 signatories made of well-respected academics, governments and intergovernmental organizations’ officials and ex-officials.
