IGTN Bulletin on the World Trade Organization Fourth Ministerial

Abstract:Doha, Qatar is the setting for the WTO Fourth Ministerial, November 9-13, 2001. It could hardly be more remote from Seattle, geographically and politically; however, its importance should not be underestimated. Six years after its founding amidst much fanfare in 1995 and two years beyond the Seattle Debacle, the WTO faces a crisis of legitimacy and viability. The agendas that separated the member states and caused the Seattle Ministerial to collapse remain unresolved today with many countries of the South demanding their agenda for change be taken seriously.

IGTN Position Paper on the WTO

Abstract:The direction of IGTN advocacy is to reduce the scope of the WTO to trade issues, to ensure food security from the household to the national level, and to restore governments' power to regulate their monetary and financial systems and determine their own development agendas. Therefore, we reject the introduction of new issues into the WTO agenda and the launching of a new round of negotiations.
