The solemn commitments to eradicate poverty made at the World Summit for Social Development (1994) and the Fourth World Conference on Women (1995) are also sounding hollow as the 5-year reviews of the follow-up to those conferences are confronting the still growing gap between wealthy and poor people worldwide.
