Global Women’s Project Director Deva Fall Kemmis, Ph.D., today praised the tremendous success of the One Billion Rising campaign, which took place across the globe this weekend. Kemmis said, “I commend everyone who stood up to take down gender-based violence this Valentine’s Day weekend. The image we share with you is from the Cairo event."
These activists, featured in this image are from Cairo, but events occurred in locations, including: Berlin, Peru, Mumbia, Honolulu, Chile, Angola, Gambia, and elsewhere, demonstrate the energy and exuberance of this campaign. They were joined by committed citizens worldwide, who came together to make a powerful statement about love this Valentine’s Day by rising for freedom from violence for women and girls. A young Kenyan woman, who took part in a local celebration said, “We rise against domestic violence, we rise against forced marriage and bride-kidnappings, we rise against rape.” See more about the event at the site for One Billion Rising.
Kemmis says, “Thank you for rising with us, for helping to break the chains of gender-based violence.”
