CoC staff to chair SID-W Development Finance Working Group

Center of Concern team member Aldo Caliari has been appointed co-chair of the Development Finance Working Group of the Society for International Development, Washington D.C. Chapter. CoC is honored by this appointment. Through Aldo’s work, it looks forward to supporting the Society’s endeavor to advance equitable development by bringing diverse constituencies together to debate critical ideas, policies and practices that will shape our global future.

Financial regulation and gender equality: is there a connection?

 

The global financial crisis led to greater job loss and poverty among women than men while rising food prices and responsibility for social reproduction take excessive tolls on the livelihoods of women.

A new primer prepared by the “A bottom up approach to righting financial regulation initiative” argues that financial crises and austerity measures adversely impact women in particular and, proposes paths for regulation and recovery to take women’s rights and concerns into account.

African countries and their leaders are increasingly waking up to the imperative of diversifiying their production structures. But, just as macroeconomic indicators have improved, the structure of production has become more concentrated. How can that be explained?

paper co-written by Center of Concern staff Aldo Caliari  sets out to argue that macroeconomic policies are the missing link in African industrialization strategies. The paper was delivered at the conference  "Learning to Compete: Industrial Development and Policy in Africa", organized in Helsinki by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research on June 24-25 2013.

CoC hosts meeting in Vienna on human rights and financial regulation

 

Center of Concern co-organizes with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights an expert meeting: “Human rights and the financial crisis in focus.”  The meeting will be held on July 1st, 2013, in the city of Vienna, and convenes representatives of human rights special procedures, National Human Rights Institutions, financial regulatory bodies and civil society for a discussion on human rights approaches to financial regulation and economic recovery.

CoC attends events to mark human rights conference 20th anniversary

 

On June 26 Center of Concern staff Aldo Caliari took part of Strengthening the Human Rights Movement Globally: Vienna +20 conference, held in Vienna, Austria.

 

On June 27-28, he attended the Vienna +20: Advancing the Protection of Human Rights conference, convened by the Austrian government, where he was one of a group 30 experts that integrated a working group tasked with providing recommendations on mainstreaming human rights in the new generation of development goals after 2015.

 

On the evening of June 27, he spoke at "European austerity policies: Potential impact on the realization of economic, social and cultural rights", a panel discussion convened, among others, by the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions.  

 

These events took place in the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Vienna Conference on Human Rights.

CoC appears at UNCTAD panels on global value chains and regional economic cooperation

 

Center of Concern, through team member Aldo Caliari, was represented at the UNCTAD Symposium, to be held in Geneva on June 24 and 25 2013. One of the panels he spoke at addressed the role of Southern countries’ financial and monetary cooperation in financing development. The next day he shared a panel with representatives of UNCTAD and the World Trade Organization to discuss impacts on developing countries of engagement in global value chains.

On the same dates, a paper co-written by Aldo Caliari was delivered at the conference  "Learning to Compete: Industrial Development and Policy in Africa", organized in Helsinki by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research. The paper was delivered by his co-author, Chukwuma Agu (African Heritage Institution).

RBW featured at New York events on the international development goals

 

On June 17, 2013 in the city of New York, RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari spoke at a closed informal workshop hosted by the Rockefeller Foundation to discuss the methodological issues in setting targets and selecting indicators for the global development goals that are expected to replace the Millennium Development Goals in 2015. Among other inputs, the meeting will feature results of “The Power of Numbers,” a multi-author research project to which Caliari contributed the study on MDG 8.

 

On the following day, he made a presentation at an internal workshop for UNDP staff on the theme “Finance regulation and the Human Rights-Based Approach.”

RBW presents at civil society and business meeting on G20 in Moscow

On June 13-14, RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari attended the "Civil 20" in Moscow -- a gathering of civil society organizations doing advocacy in the lead up to the Group of 20 Summit, whose Presidency is held this year by the Russian Federation.

He took part of the deliberations of the Working Group on International Financial Architecture where he presented on a paper such Working Group delivered earlier this year. He also spoke at a Panel discussion of C20 and Business 20 representatives on the theme of Financing for Investment in Infrastructure.

Does the World Bank live up to its human rights obligations?

In 2012, the World Bank launched a two-year consultation process to review and update its social and environmental safeguard policies.  At a panel hosted by the American University's Washington College of Law, on June 7, RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari offered an assessment of these World Bank reform efforts from a human rights perspective.
