RBW Attends Conference on Critical Debt Policy Issues

On November 11, Center of Concern team member Aldo Caliari attends UNCTAD’s 9th Debt Management Conference, held at the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the critical current issues on debt policy that the conference will address and on which Rethinking Bretton Woods will provide its perspective are: external shocks, financial stability and debt; debt restructuring mechanisms and the outlook for debt sustainability in developing countries after the HIPC Initiative and the global crisis.

Lima, Peru: RBW Featured at Meeting on Private Sector Finance Strategies

On October 28 through 30 2013, in the city of Lima, Peru, RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari participates in a meeting on the theme “Political, economic and social impacts of private sector financing strategies.” The meeting convenes representatives from specialized civil society organizations from all regions of the economic South, especially Latin America, to assess the impact of techniques to leverage private finance for development and Public-Private Partnerships. Cosponsors are the Heinrich Boell Foundation, the International Working Group on Trade-Finance Linkages, Latin American Network on Debt and Development and Eurodad. Caliari's presentations assert new understandings of global financial trends that give momentum to leveraging private finance strategies and on the fiscal risks of Public-Private Partnerships.

Vienna Human Rights Conference Underscores Concerns on Financial Sector

Aldo Caliari, the director of the Center's Rethinking Bretton Woods Project, reminds colleagues of the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights and its Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action.  To commemorate the occasion, 140 civil society representatives from around the world gathered in Vienna. "The importance of tackling financial abuses to protect human rights was one of the salient points of a declaration issued in the occasion," reports Caliari in a blog for rightingfinance.org

Moving from principles to action on responsible lending and borrowing

 

On September 26th, 2013, Center of Concern team member Aldo Caliari spoke at “From Principles to Action,” an event on the Norwegian Debt Audit and the UNCTAD Principles on Responsible Sovereign Lending and Borrowing. The event, held in the occasion of the High Level Special Event on Millennium Development Goals, will take place at the UN Headquarters in New York, and is cosponsored by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNCTAD, Jubilee USA, Eurodad and the Norwegian Campaign for Debt Cancellation -SLUG.

Speaking on behalf of Jubilee USA he said: "I want to thank the other cosponsors for their willingness to do a side event on this topic at this particular place and time. Yesterday governments approved the roadmap for negotiations towards a new generation of development goals. As the world seeks to advance goals such as eradicating poverty, addressing the situation of countries that continue to struggle with the burden of debt repayments will need to be central part of that new development agenda."

The meeting, to be held at Roger Smith Hotel in the city of New York, will take place in the context of the events surrounding the MDGs Special Event bringing together high level officials from all countries at the UN Headquarters to assess progress on MDGs.

Opting for the Poor in Making Tax Policies

Center of Concern is proud to cosponsor with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty, an Expert meeting on the theme “The human rights impacts of fiscal and tax policy.” The meeting takes place on September 16-17, at the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and is also cosponsored by Friedrich Ebert Foundation, MISEREOR and Christian Aid. The meeting is intended as a consultation to assist the Rapporteur in preparing an upcoming report she will submit to the Human Rights Council in 2014. At the meeting, RBW Project Director Aldo Caliari will make a presentation on taxation in the financial sector.

RBW featured at Central and Northern Asia finance officials meeting (August 2013)

 

On August 27-28, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the National Bank of Kazakhstan held a High Level Policy Dialogue “Macroeconomic Policies for Sustainable and Resilient Growth in North and Central Asia.” The meeting took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and convened authorities of Central Banks and Finance Ministries of countries in that region, alongside intergovernmental organizations staff, academics and civil society experts. Center of Concern team member Aldo Caliari was present, speaking at a panel on Diversification and Macroeconomic Policies.

RBW to speak on social security rights in the context of budget cuts

On August 19-20, Center of Concern team member Aldo Caliari participated of a consultation convened by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on “The right to social security in the context of austerity.” The forecast that recovery from the economic crisis might take several years could mean years of austerity measures, with incalculable negative effects on the enjoyment of economic and social rights. At the meeting, representatives of several disciplines (human rights, economics, finance and social protection) focused on the right to social security, obstacles that austerity measures may pose to its enjoyment and how State action in this area should be affected by international human rights obligations.

RBW dialogues with government officials, attends regional consultation in Uruguay

On August 16 Center of Concern team member Aldo Caliari was in Montevideo (Uruguay) speaking at a public forum “Progress and Challenges on Social Justice and Tax Justice in Uruguay.” The event, also featuring the Director of the Tax Collection Agency and the Minister of Labor of Uruguay, explored issues involved in the recent and ongoing tax reforms in the country from the perspective of social justice.

The following day, he was a panelist at the “Regional consultation on links among economic, ecological and gender justice” being organized by gender advocacy network Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era –DAWN.
